IC Insights: the biggest growth momentum of the semiconductor industry will come from cars
PC is no longer a killer application of semiconductors, and instead, many new applications are emerging. Including automotive semiconductor market - a strong market for the semiconductor industry over the years.
The personal computer (PC) market has been the single biggest driver of semiconductor sales for many years, but has recently declined for sixth consecutive years. At the same time, the semiconductor industry in 2017 is expected to usher in the best selling year, of which the most strong growth momentum comes from the automotive market, the growth force will continue to 2021.
PC is no longer a killer application of semiconductors, and instead, many new applications are emerging. Including automotive semiconductor market - a strong market for the semiconductor industry over the years - with the increase in the number of semiconductor products in each car, automotive semiconductors rapidly become the most important market in the semiconductor industry.
In fact, ICInsights, a market research firm, predicts that, at least in 2021, the automotive semiconductor market will be the most powerful chip end application market. According to the company forecast, from 2016 to 2021, the automotive electronic system sales will grow at a CAGR of 5.4% (CAGR).
ICInsights pointed out that this growth trend from the market for automotive electronic systems increasing demand, but also pay more attention to the unmanned vehicle (autopilot), car to car (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications, and vehicle safety, convenience and environmental protection function for electric vehicles (EV) the interest is not to mention.
Therefore, ICInsights expects 2017 IC sales will increase by 22%, next year will continue to grow by 16%.
In 2017, the global electronic system market is expected to reach $1 trillion and 490 billion, of which the automotive market accounts for 9.1%, slightly higher than 8.9% in 2015 and 9% in 016 years. ICInsights pointed out that the share of cars in the global electronic system has been slightly improved in recent years, and is expected to maintain this slow growth trend until 2021, when the automotive electronic products will be sold in the global electronic system market accounted for 9.8%.
ICInsights said that, despite the addition of more electronic systems in the car, but due to the pricing pressure of IC and electronic systems, before 2021, the share of automotive terminal applications will be far more than the current share of the overall electronic system.
According to ICInsights's latest report on semiconductor industry drivers, CAGR is expected to reach 4.6% by 2021. The company says growing applications from robotics, wearable health devices and promoting the Internet of things are helping to promote growth in this area.
Other CAGR forecasts listed in the report include 4.2% growth in communication systems and about 2.8% of consumer electronics systems. ICInsights points out that in all of the major semiconductor driving forces in 2021, the CAGR in the PC market will be the lowest.
